This large antique Art Deco ceramic vessel by Edwin Pearson is designed as a stylized cactus finished in a turquoise-blue glaze with a textured, speckled surface. Executed in New York in 1936, the modernist piece features three rectangular openings at the top and a bold, geometric silhouette. The base is hand signed with the maker's mark EDWIN PEARSON, a copyright symbol, and NEW YORK, 1936.
Edwin Pearson was a teacher at the Arts & Crafts Guild of New York. int he early 1920s-1930s He managed an art collective called San Jose Potteries in San Antonio, Texas. Later in his career he was museum specialist and exhibition sculptor for the National Park Service in the 1950s.
