Vintage 1960s Acoma New Mexico Geometric Pottery Seed Pot

This pot has sharp geometric patterns in black, turquoise and brown on a cream background. This Southwestern ceramic vessel made by potters of Acoma Pueblo is decorated with bold, symmetrical geometric patterns and often used for storing seeds for planting. This is signed with Acoma and the artist's initials.

Seed pots were designed to protect the seeds for next year's planting from rodents and insects. A wide-mouthed vessel like a traditional bowl, jar, or olla could not keep vermin out. So, seed pots were created with only a tiny hole that would allow one seed to be dropped in at a time.
